Math students will know the stress of preparing for their weighted assessments (WAs), or exams. P6 students will further realise that the PSLE maths exams are a crucial paper because it determines (along with other results) which secondary school they will get to attend. Primary level Maths is a very important subject because it sets the foundation for Mathematics in secondary school and Junior College.
Here are some simple ways to overcome questions in Maths:
(1) Know the methods used to solve Maths questions
Maths Teachers in school will teach you methods on how to solve questions (and so will your Math tutors here). You should learn these methods so that you can apply them to all maths question papers. Students should learn these methods before the exams so they can apply them even as they practice for the exams. Knowing the theory behind the concept is not good enough – doing well for the Maths WA, or PSLE exams means applying methods quickly and accurately to the question.
(2) Ask your Maths Tutor (or school teacher) if you are uncertain of something
Our maths tutors are here to help! Unfortunately, sometimes students are either afraid of asking for help or they do not bother asking for help. It is crucial that students ask their teachers for help if they do not fully understand a question. Clarifying doubts is an important part of learning – it is only through going over your mistakes that you (and your Maths tutor!) learn what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong. You simply have to overcome your fear or asking and clear up whatever you do not understand with your school or tuition teachers if you need help. Remember, your teachers will not know what you do not know if you do not ask us!
(3) Practice makes perfect
Students should simply practice with past year papers from different schools. Different permutations of questions will reinforce and test students’ knowledge of the different concepts involved and their application to the different kinds of questions. Practising a lot will help students spot careless mistakes and they should correct these mistakes before the exam. Again, our Maths tutors hare here to help you, please use us as a resource.
